about

Ever since I started doing music I’ve been told to release cover songs, (usually by some industry person convinced that’s what would make me a star, cue eye roll)… but as a songwriter, I always wanted to put my words out into the world, not someone else’s. But “Just A Girl” already perfectly says what I want to say, as it does pirouettes on the razor’s edge of satire where I, as a songwriter, love to balance and dance. To be there as a performer instead of a writer is an interesting challenge and relief. A challenge because I have trouble considering myself a vocalist… if you take away the storytelling I do with my lyrics, visuals & onstage performance it’s like… what’s left? I’m not one of those people with legendary pipes and I’m ok with that. So this was a way for me to see if my me “ness” could still translate… and yet, what a relief to perform a song that has already proven itself in the cultural psyche. It’s a perfect song! I’m not waiting on feedback from the public to see if they “get” what I was trying to say. I know that me and the people who love this song are already dancing together, and have been, in that safe cathartic space where you scream out loud the very words they tried to program into your DNA, to release them, to laugh, to share a knowing, head-banging nod at the poetic irony of being progressive in 1995…or 2022.

about

Boyfriend New Orleans, Louisiana

Boyfriend has been called a “mysterious, raunchy feminist” by NPR, a “sex-positive English nerd” by Huffington Post and “endearingly weird” by Paper Magazine. She coined the term "Rap Cabaret,” to describe her live show which is, according to Gambit Magazine, a stage show "as much cone-bra, arena-sized Madonna as it is an intimate, hilariously profane psychosexual bedroom drama.” ... more
